Madeira · Live hazard alerts
Active fires and hazards near Madeira's trails right now
We pull every active alert we can trace to an official channel, fire detections, trail closures and weather warnings, and match each one to the nearest marked trail. Nothing here comes from a news scrape or a guess.
This list is only as good as the four official and satellite feeds behind it: satellite detection for active fire, IFCN for trail closures, IPMA for weather warnings, and SRPC for road closures. A small, cloud covered or just started fire can stay invisible to satellite detection for hours, which is exactly what happened near Porto Moniz between 25 and 27 July 2026: firefighters were on scene while the satellite feed showed nothing.
So treat an empty list as "nothing detected by these four feeds", never as "confirmed safe". IFCN's own closure status is the one authority that overrides everything else on this site, including the live trail score. Always check local news and official channels before hiking into a reported wildfire area.
Heat is the warning most walkers meet, and the one where the fix is a start time rather than a cancellation: when to start walking in Madeira's heat.

Two different dates appear in the Date column, and they are not the same measurement. A bare date is the official feed's own start time for the hazard. A date marked "recorded" is when the alert first entered our feed, which is all IFCN and SRPC give us: PR7 has been closed for years and is recorded from the day this check first ran, not from the day it closed.
Fire: satellite detection. Closures: IFCN. Weather warnings: IPMA. Road closures: SRPC. Every alert links to its official source above.

Closures announced weeks ahead are not incidents and never reach this table. For the April ultra-trail weekend, see which roads close for the MIUT ultra-trail.

The same weather that grounds a walk can turn an arrival around, and the threshold is a different one: why wind, not rain, diverts Madeira flights.
Common questions
Is this an official safety source?
No. It aggregates four official and satellite feeds, but the aggregation itself is ours, and satellite fire detection can miss small or cloud covered fires for hours. IFCN's own closure status remains the sole official authority, and it already hard overrides the live trail score regardless of this page.
How often is this updated?
The underlying feeds refresh on their own schedules: fire detection every few hours, closures and weather warnings within the day. This page reflects the most recent successful check of each feed, not a live stream.
Why isn't every hazard reported by local news included?
Because a news report cannot be automatically verified the way a government feed can. This page only ever shows alerts we can trace to one of the four official sources above, each linked from its row.
