About Levada do Caniço
This is an unclassified levada walk linking the village of Camacha with Caniço in southern Madeira, starting with a long descent on old stone steps before joining the water channel of the Levada do Caniço. The path runs along the irrigation channel with open views across the valley toward the mountains and farmland, and on clear days out to the Desertas Islands on the horizon. Parts of the route are narrow, overgrown, and not well maintained, and there is a tunnel section to pass through.
Levada do Caniço (L-CANIÇO) is a one way route of about 4.2 km in Madeira.
What you'll see
Expect a deep valley, walk-through tunnels, a levada water-channel path, waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, a mountain summit and laurel forest (laurisilva).
Landmarks on the route include Arvoredo.
The path runs between roughly 273 m and 462 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.
Difficulty
Levada do Caniço rates as easy on our objective scale, based on 4.2 km and 152 m of ascent.
This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.
How long it takes
Allow about 2h 4m one way, a point-to-point route.
The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.
Getting there and back
Starts at Camacha. Ends at Caniço. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. A car park is mapped for this route, though its size is not recorded. The car park is about 670 m from the start.
What to bring
There is a tunnel along the levada section that can be slippery, so bring a torch and watch your footing.
Best time to walk it
Year-round. Avoid after heavy rain, when the levada can overflow the path.
High trails are best early: clear summits and the chance of a sunrise above the clouds before the cloud builds.
This route runs through a mix of sun and shade.
The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
