About Vereda do Pico Fernandes
An old stone mountain footpath that drops from the ER 209 road on the Paúl da Serra plateau down into the Rabaçal valley, where it links up with the PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes. The upper section runs through open high-altitude heath and gives a wide panoramic view from Pico Fernandes at around 1,400 metres, then the path descends into laurel forest with til and lily-of-the-valley trees. It works as a quieter back way into the 25 Fontes area, though it is a steep one-way descent rather than a loop.
Vereda do Pico Fernandes (PR6.5) is a one way route of about 3.8 km in Madeira.
What you'll see
Expect high mountain terrain, endemic Madeiran flora, waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, a mountain summit and laurel forest (laurisilva).
Landmarks on the route include Fernandes.
The path runs between roughly 984 m and 1,411 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.

Getting there and back
Starts at Paul da Serra. Ends at 25 Fontes. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. There is a car park at the start, though its size is not recorded on the map.
Best time to walk it
Apr to Oct (high and exposed plateau start; expect cloud, wind and cold in winter)
High trails are best early: clear summits and the chance of a sunrise above the clouds before the cloud builds.
This route runs through a mix of sun and shade.
The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
A live 0-100 score picks the best 30-minute window for the day. See today's window in the app.
