About Vereda da Câmara de Carga do Rabaçal

This short trail in the Rabaçal area follows a water channel through dense laurel forest down to the câmara de carga, the loading chamber that gathers levada water and sends it through a pipeline to the Calheta hydroelectric station on the south coast. The route passes through a long stone tunnel dug in 1877, around 800 metres of dark passage that links up with the Levada das 25 Fontes path. It is a sheltered, forested walk rather than an exposed ridge, with the historic waterworks as its main point of interest.

Vereda da Câmara de Carga do Rabaçal (PR6.7) is a one way route of about 1.8 km in Madeira.

What you'll see

Along the way you'll find walk-through tunnels, historic features, a levada water-channel path, panoramic viewpoints and laurel forest (laurisilva).

The path runs between roughly 944 m and 1,293 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.

Difficulty

Vereda da Câmara de Carga do Rabaçal rates as easy on our objective scale, based on 1.8 km, 3 m of ascent and low exposure.

This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.

The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.

Getting there and back

Starts at Rabaçal. Ends at Túnel do Cavalo. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. The car park at the start has room for about 50.

What to bring

Passes through a long tunnel of roughly 800 metres dug in 1877. It is tall enough to walk upright but unlit, so bring a torch or headlamp; expect dripping water and an uneven, damp floor.

One drinking-water point is mapped on the route. Fill up if you pass it, but carry enough to finish without it.

Best time to walk it

Year-round; the tunnel and forest can be wet, and winter brings more rain and slippery footing

This route runs through a mix of sun and shade.

The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
