Getting there by bus

The nearest public bus stop to the Levada dos Tornos trailhead is Curral Romeiros D2 (1158A), 74 m away. That is a straight line on the map and not a walk: on this terrain the climb between the two can matter more than the distance.

The timetable we hold ran until July 30, 2026 and no newer one has been published, so departure times are not shown. The stop and the lines serving it (029) are unchanged.

Horários do Funchal is the only Madeira operator that publishes a machine-readable timetable. A trail without this block is one we hold no bus data for, not one no bus reaches.

About Levada dos Tornos

A long contour levada walk on the south side of Madeira that runs from the hills above Funchal across toward Camacha, following the water channel that once fed the lower farmland. After an initial climb the path stays mostly level and threads along steep, terraced slopes with open views over the bay of Funchal and the Atlantic, passing a mix of eucalyptus regrowth, ferns and garden tea houses where you can stop for a break. One stretch is narrow and exposed with a sheer drop and little fencing, so it is best avoided in wet or windy weather.

Levada dos Tornos (L-TORNOS) is a one way route of about 11.8 km in Madeira.

What you'll see

Expect walk-through tunnels, exposed, drop-side sections, a levada water-channel path, laurel forest (laurisilva) and panoramic viewpoints.

Landmarks on the route include Curral dos Romeiros.

The path runs between roughly 534 m and 666 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.

Difficulty

Levada dos Tornos rates as medium on our objective scale, based on 11.8 km and 145 m of ascent.

This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.

How long it takes

Allow about 3h 41m one way, a point-to-point route.

The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.

Getting there and back

Starts at Curral dos Romeiros. Ends at Camacha. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. The car park at the start has room for about 100. The car park is about 760 m from the start. Long one-way levada; arrange a shuttle or taxi from Camacha (walking back is very long).

What to bring

At least one rock tunnel near the later part of the route; it is short but dark, so bring a torch or phone light and expect taller walkers to stoop.

Best time to walk it

Year-round, but skip wet or windy days (exposed drops)

This route is mostly open to the sun, so it bites on a hot, clear day. Start early and carry more water than you think you need.

The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
