About Vereda do Calhau

A steep zig-zag footpath dropping beside the Achadas da Cruz cable car (one of the steepest in Europe) to the Calhau das Achadas, an isolated sea-level fajã of vines and old houses with no road. Walked downhill with the ocean ahead the whole way, then ride the cable car back up. Check the cable car is running before you go: it can close in high wind.

Vereda do Calhau (V-CALHAU) is a one way route of about 2.3 km in Madeira.

What you'll see

Expect coastal cliffs and ocean views, panoramic viewpoints and waterfalls.

Landmarks on the route include Calhau das Achadas.

The path runs between roughly 13 m and 457 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.

Difficulty

Vereda do Calhau rates as medium on our objective scale, based on 2.3 km, 23 m of ascent and high exposure.

This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.

How long it takes

Allow about 1h 30m one way, a point-to-point route.

The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.

Getting there and back

Starts at Achadas da Cruz (cable-car top). Ends at Calhau das Achadas (fajã). This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. The car park at the start has room for about 25. The return is by the Achadas da Cruz cable car (teleférico), run by the Câmara Municipal do Porto Moniz. Tickets are sold at the cable car: €3.00 one way, €5.00 return (reduced €1.00 / €2.00 on a +65, student or reduced-mobility card), checked against the council's own price list on 2026-08-03. The council does not publish operating hours or a running/stopped status anywhere on that page, so check it is operating before you set off: it closes in high wind. There is no walk-out road, so the cable car is the way back up, and the alternative is climbing the 444 m you have just descended.

What to bring

Sturdy shoes for the steep descent.

4 drinking-water points are mapped along the route. Fill up where you can, but carry enough to finish without them.

Best time to walk it

Year-round; avoid wet/foggy days

Coastal walks are often at their best in soft late-afternoon light.

Most of this route sits in shade, which keeps it walkable on days when open ground is punishing.

The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
