About Vereda da Cavaca

A steep laurisilva vereda climbing out of Chão da Ribeira in the Seixal valley up towards the Fanal plateau on Madeira's north-west. The path zig-zags through dense, mossy laurel forest, gaining several hundred metres, with openings onto the deep Ribeira do Seixal valley and the north coast. A demanding, quiet route into one of the island's wettest, greenest corners. Note: the final plateau stretch follows the ticketed PR13 (Vereda do Fanal); crossing it legally requires the PR13 ticket (4.50 EUR on SIMplifica).

Vereda da Cavaca (V-CAVACA) is a one way route of about 5.3 km in Madeira.

What you'll see

Expect laurel forest (laurisilva), panoramic viewpoints, waterfalls and a mountain summit.

Landmarks on the route include Fio, Rocha dos Ingleses, Fanal and Pedreira.

The path runs between roughly 356 m and 1,204 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.

Difficulty

Vereda da Cavaca rates as hard on our objective scale, based on 5.3 km, 857 m of ascent and low exposure.

This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.

The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.

Getting there and back

Starts at Chão da Ribeira (Seixal). Ends at Fanal. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. A car park is mapped for this route, though its size is not recorded. The car park is about 710 m from the start.

What to bring

5 drinking-water points are mapped along the route. Fill up where you can, but carry enough to finish without them.

Best time to walk it

Year-round; avoid wet days (steep, slippery)

High trails are best early: clear summits and the chance of a sunrise above the clouds before the cloud builds.

Most of this route sits in shade, which keeps it walkable on days when open ground is punishing.

The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.

A live 0-100 score picks the best 30-minute window for the day. See today's window in the app.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vereda da Cavaca worth hiking today?

It depends on today's conditions, and that is exactly what Levadas answers. The app reads the current weather at Vereda da Cavaca, the safe-start window, how busy it is and the official IFCN status, then gives one honest go-or-wait score from 0 to 100, re-checked every 20 minutes.
