About Vereda do Larano
Vereda do Larano is a coastal mountain footpath on Madeira's northeast side, an old walking route that once linked Porto da Cruz with Machico and Caniçal. It traces high cliffs above the Atlantic, alternating open ledges with stretches of forest, and many sections run close to steep drops without any railing. Most people pair it with the Boca do Risco viewpoint, where the path meets the edge of the cliffs and opens onto the sea.
Vereda do Larano (V-LARANO) is a one way route of about 4.6 km in Madeira.
What you'll see
Along the way you'll find exposed, drop-side sections, waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, a mountain summit, laurel forest (laurisilva) and coastal cliffs and ocean views.
Landmarks on the route include Boca do Risco, Teleférico and Furado.
The path runs between roughly 187 m and 460 m above sea level, so conditions can change with altitude.
Difficulty
Vereda do Larano rates as medium on our objective scale, based on 4.6 km, 355 m of ascent and some exposed sections.
This grade is an estimate from distance, ascent and exposure, not an official IFCN rating.
How long it takes
Allow about 3h 22m one way, a point-to-point route.
The app's live 0-100 score also flags the latest safe start time for the day. See it in the app.
Getting there and back
Starts at Larano (Machico). Ends at Porto da Cruz. This is a one-way route, so you finish where your car is not: plan a second car, a taxi from the far end, or the walk back before you set off. No car park is mapped at the start, so plan to leave the car on the road nearby.
Best time to walk it
Year-round, but best in spring and autumn; take care in winter wind/rain on the exposed cliffs
High trails are best early: clear summits and the chance of a sunrise above the clouds before the cloud builds.
Most of this route sits in shade, which keeps it walkable on days when open ground is punishing.
The sun and shade reading comes from the slope's aspect and steepness, so it describes terrain shading and not tree cover.
A live 0-100 score picks the best 30-minute window for the day. See today's window in the app.
